Why do pools turn green?
Chlorine Levels Drop
When chlorine falls below 1ppm, algae can grow unchecked within 24–48 hours — especially during warm weather.
Algae Spores Bloom
Algae spores are always present in your pool environment. Without adequate sanitisation, they multiply rapidly.
Filter Running Too Little
Your filter should run 8–12 hours per day. Insufficient circulation allows algae to establish and spread.
Phosphate Build-Up
Phosphates from leaves, fertiliser and rain feed algae growth. High phosphate levels make green pools worse.
A green pool chemical treatment is designed to bring your pool water back to life without the need to drain or replace it.
This approach will usually take between 2 - 4 visits depending on the condition of the pool.
Visit 1: We will assess the water condition, test and balance the water chemistry then adding a strong chlorine shock treatment along with a good surface scrub.
Visit 2: We will begin with a vacuum to waste all debris on the bottom of the pool. If the water is now clear we rebalance the chemistry and finalise the service. If the water is still green we repeat the activities in visit 1 and schedule another visit.
The process repeats until we get a clean pool. And while every pool is a little different, we usually have pools crystal clear within 2-4 visits.
In some cases, it may be a better course of action to completely drain the pool, clean out using pressure washing and acid washing and refilling the pool with fresh water.
The process is not suitable for all pools so we will need to assess each pool for multiple factors such as pool age, surface type, area ground water and more.
If we do choose this option, the steps we follow will look like this:
Visit 1: Remove large debris and pump out pool water.
Visit 2: Clean out all surface debris with pressure wash. We also may complete an acid wash if your pool surface allows for it. At the end of this visit we will begin refilling the pool.
Visit 3: Water chemistry balancing and service completion.
Most green pools can be visibly improving within 24–72 hours of treatment. Severely affected pools may require 2–5 days.
Yes. Green pools contain harmful bacteria, algae and unbalanced chemicals that can cause skin irritation, eye infections and illness.
Drain & acid wash is a deep clean for severely affected pools — we drain the pool completely and treat the surface. Chemical treatment uses shock chlorination to restore a pool without draining, best for mild to moderate green pools.
Cost depends on pool size and severity. Contact us for a free quote — we’ll assess your pool and recommend the right treatment.
With regular servicing and correct chemical balance, your pool won’t turn green again. We recommend fortnightly or monthly maintenance services to prevent recurrence.
